The Present Day

Queen Elizabeth llHer Majesty the Queen (the present Duke of Lancaster) visited the Castle in 1957 - when she planted a tree at the castle, and again in 1982 - when council workers were deployed to weed the streets!

In recent years the village has become a tourist attraction with the Castle, Norman Church, Glassworks' visitor centres, Sheepskin shop, antique shops and the Dog and Partridge Hotel and Restaurant.

New by-passPlaqueIn 1990 a new road was built to by-pass the village from the top of Burton Street to the Dove Bridge.

Subsequently the new A50 was opened between Stoke and the M1 and the old road was renumbered as the A511.

In 2000, the country suffered major flooding and the Rivers Dove and Trent both burst their banks. Although Burton's flood defences successfully kept the town safe, Hatton and Rolleston were severely affected as the following pictures show:

Things did not improve, when in 2001, several local farms were devastated from a major national outbreak of foot and mouth disease.
