critical discourse ba hons graphic design, southampton institute, 1999 introduction

I am a Graphic Design student at Southampton Institute, England, and this site is about my final year Critical Discourse (previously titled Dissertation). I felt that since it is about web design it was only right to document my progression here on the web. Included is the preliminary report that was submitted which explains the subject I have chosen and a plan of how I intended to research and carry out the project.

the brief

The Critical Discourse is a cultural studies project, carried out in year 3, on a topic of your choice that has some relation to the course subject. It is the final piece of theoretical and analytical work carried out and may be presented as a conventional dissertation with text and illustrations, a report, case study or catalogue raisonne which consists of a 6-10,000 words

  1. To familiarise each student with research methods appropriate to their topic, using standard methodoligies of research and presentation.
  2. To assist and enable the student to carry out a substantial piece of academic work.
outcomes of the critical discourse
  1. The student should have engaged in a stimulating and personally fulfilling programme of research and writing.
  2. The student should have increased his or her capacity for sustained and acurate research, independant study and critical thought.
